A storyboard artist is an outstanding visual communicator who uses a script/concept/brief to create a clear and vibrant visual story that acts as a reference for others in the production team of a film/video. The artist uses the storyboard to convey the expressions, emotions, and gestures of characters when they interact with the environment. Storyboards artists are vital to the film production process and work on a variety of projects including feature films, short films, corporate videos, documentaries, television series, video games, and comics.
The job of a storyboard artist is to sketch scenes that visually narrate the story with minimal words/dialogue and in line with the director’s vision. Artists visualize and draw the scenes manually by hand or by using a computer and popular storyboard software such as Boardo, FrameForge, Moviestorm, ShotPro, Storyboard Quick, Storyboard That, StudioBinder, and Toon Boom StoryBoard Pro to name a few. In most cases, the storyboard artist is also tasked with pitching the storyboard to the director or creative lead of a production team.
Storyboard artists must have very strong drawing skills, hone their drawing skills regularly, and be familiar with cinematography so as to be able to visualize what the camera sees and to stay equipped for the job. Storyboard artist jobs are generally listed on job boards of recruitment firms, production companies, animation and VFX studios, and comics publishing firms.
