A game developer (a.k.a. video game developer) specializes in the creation of video games. Some game developers work solo, managing all tasks in the development process while most developers work as part of a larger team comprising creative and technical talent that may include a game artist, game tester, game designer, gaming analyst, game programmer, game animator, and others. Game developers can specialize and build their gaming career either on the design side or in programming (engine, network, graphic, tool chain, & AI). It is common to find an experienced professional working as a freelance game developer.
Game developers may specialize in device-based development (mobile phones, personal computers, tablets, arcades, or …..social/online platforms), or focus on specific consoles (Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Sega Genesis, Wonderswan, Xbox One), or specialize in game types (role-playing video games or first-person shooters). Some may even focus on game genres (action, action-adventure, adventure, role-play, simulation, strategy, sports, puzzle, or idle games).
While some game developers prefer to play freelance, others work as full time employees in the studios of large video game enterprises such as Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts (EA), Epic Games, Mojang, Microsoft, Naughty Dog, Nintendo, Rockstar Games, Sega Games, Sony Computer Entertainment, Square Enix, Ubisoft, and Zinga.
Gaming is a massive industry with gaming studios and game publishers employing scores of designers and developers across the globe. The gaming workforce includes company employees as well as freelancers. Hundreds of game developer jobs are advertised every day by recruiters across the world.
